# Death and Player Tombs

*Death does not end the journey, but every defeat leaves something behind.*

EldenRO uses a custom **Player Tomb** system that turns defeat into a recoverable risk. When an eligible character dies, their current Zeny is left behind inside a tomb at the place of death.

The owner must return to that location and reclaim the tomb before dying again. A later eligible death replaces the previous tomb, causing anything stored in the older grave to be lost.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**One character. One active Player Tomb.**

Creating a new Player Tomb destroys the previous one, even when the new tomb contains no Zeny.
{% endhint %}

### What Happens When You Die

The exact result of death depends on the map, the encounter and your current party role.

#### Eligible Death

When the Player Tomb system applies:

1. Your previous Player Tomb is destroyed.
2. All Zeny currently carried by the character is removed.
3. A new Player Tomb is created at the death location.
4. The removed Zeny is stored inside that tomb.
5. Your character returns according to the current respawn rules.

The system stores the Zeny carried at the exact moment of death. Zeny held elsewhere is not part of the tomb.

#### Death With No Zeny

A new Player Tomb is still created when the character dies with zero Zeny.

This matters because the new empty tomb replaces any previous grave that may still contain unrecovered Zeny.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**Dying again can erase your previous loss.**

After losing Zeny, avoid carrying nothing into another dangerous encounter while your original tomb remains unrecovered. A later eligible death can replace it with an empty grave.
{% endhint %}

#### Protected Death

A Player Tomb is not created when the current map or encounter disables the Zeny death penalty.

Protected situations include:

* Custom instances configured without death loss.
* Boss encounters where Player Tomb creation is disabled.
* Maps using the no-Zeny-penalty protection.
* Party deaths involving members who are not the party leader.

Special PvP, event or encounter rules may apply independently of the Player Tomb system.

***

### Zeny Loss

#### Amount Lost

An eligible death removes:

> **100% of the Zeny currently carried by the character**

The complete amount is transferred into the newly created Player Tomb.

#### What Is Not Lost

The Player Tomb system does not directly remove:

* Equipped weapons or armor.
* Inventory items.
* Cards.
* Refinement levels.
* Banked or externally stored currency.
* Character levels.
* Rune Points already invested.

Other map-specific death rules may still apply separately.

#### Carrying Zeny Safely

Before entering dangerous field content:

* Spend or store Zeny that you do not need.
* Carry only the amount required for the current objective.
* Recover an existing tomb before taking unnecessary risks.
* Avoid repeated attempts while an unrecovered grave still holds a large amount.
* Confirm whether the destination is an instance or an open-world map.

***

### Player Tomb Creation

#### Who Creates a Tomb

A Player Tomb is created for:

* A solo character who dies in eligible content.
* The party leader who dies in eligible content.
* A character without party protection on a map where Zeny loss is enabled.

#### Party Leader Rule

When a party is active, only the **party leader** is subject to Player Tomb creation and the associated Zeny loss.

Party members who are not the leader:

* Do not lose their carried Zeny through the Player Tomb system.
* Do not create their own Player Tomb.
* Do not replace an older tomb belonging to their character.

{% hint style="info" %}
**The party role is checked at the moment of death.**

The protection applies to party members who are not currently recognized as the party leader.
{% endhint %}

#### Previous Tomb Replacement

Each character may have only one active Player Tomb.

When a new eligible death occurs:

* The previous tomb is destroyed first.
* Any unrecovered Zeny inside it is permanently lost.
* A new tomb is created at the latest death location.
* The new tomb stores the Zeny carried during the latest death.

***

### Recovering a Player Tomb

#### Return to the Death Location

Travel back to the map and location where your character was defeated.

Use your latest Site of Grace, nearby Bonfires and unlocked travel routes to shorten the return journey.

#### Interact With the Tomb

When you reach the Player Tomb:

1. Confirm that it belongs to your character.
2. Interact with the grave.
3. Reclaim the Zeny stored inside it.
4. Verify that the recovered amount has returned to your character.

Only the tomb's owner may recover its stored Zeny.

#### Tomb Persistence

A Player Tomb remains available until one of the following occurs:

* The owner successfully reclaims it.
* A later eligible death creates a replacement tomb.
* A system or administrative action removes it.

The danger is not the passage of time. The primary risk is dying again before recovery.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Recover first. Continue second.**

After returning from defeat, reclaiming your Player Tomb should usually be your first objective.
{% endhint %}

### Respawn and the Latest Site of Grace

The Player Tomb records what was lost, while the **Respawn System** determines where your character returns.

Resting at a Bonfire records it as your latest Site of Grace. After defeat, your character normally returns near that location unless the current map, instance or multiplayer system applies a special rule.

These systems work together:

| System             | Purpose                                                       |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Player Tomb** | Stores the Zeny lost at the death location. |
| **Site of Grace** | Determines the normal return point after defeat. |
| **Bonfire Travel** | Helps the player travel back toward the tomb. |
| **Respawn Rules** | Handle exceptions for instances, summons and special content. |

See the **Respawn System** guide for the complete return rules.

***

### Warp and Escape Restrictions

The Player Tomb system is designed to make recovery part of the journey rather than something that can always be bypassed instantly.

While a recoverable death state is active, certain warp methods, commands, portals or map transitions may be restricted depending on the content.

These restrictions prevent players from:

* Escaping a dangerous recovery route without consequence.
* Bypassing invasion or encounter boundaries.
* Moving a death-related state into an incompatible map.
* Avoiding the intended risk of open-world defeat.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Warp behavior may differ between normal maps, instances, invasions and summoned-player sessions. Follow the rules of the active content.
{% endhint %}

***

### Instances and Boss Encounters

#### Custom Instances

Custom instances are protected from the normal Player Tomb loss system.

When a protected instance death occurs:

* No Player Tomb is created.
* The character does not lose Zeny through the tomb system.
* Existing return or instance-failure rules continue to apply.
* Rewards, cooldowns or encounter progress may still be affected.

#### Boss Encounters

Boss encounters configured with Player Tomb protection do not create a grave when the player is defeated.

This prevents the tomb system from interfering with controlled encounter arenas and repeated boss attempts.

#### Open-World Bosses

Do not assume every boss-like enemy provides protection.

When fighting outside a protected instance or arena, the normal map death rules may still apply. Store unnecessary Zeny before beginning the encounter.

***

### Solo and Party Deaths

#### Solo Play

A solo player has no party-member protection.

An eligible solo death:

* Removes all currently carried Zeny.
* Creates or replaces the character's Player Tomb.
* Requires the owner to return for recovery.

#### Party Leader

The party leader carries the Player Tomb risk for the group.

If the leader dies in eligible content:

* The leader loses their currently carried Zeny.
* The leader's previous tomb is replaced.
* A new tomb appears at the leader's death location.

#### Party Members

Members who are not the party leader:

* Do not lose Zeny through this system.
* Do not create a Player Tomb.
* Continue following the normal death or multiplayer return rules.

This rule allows helpers to participate without producing multiple graves or duplicating the party's death penalty.

***

### Recovery Strategy

#### Before Entering Dangerous Content

Prepare by:

* Resting at a nearby Bonfire.
* Confirming your latest Site of Grace.
* Unlocking nearby travel destinations.
* Storing unnecessary Zeny.
* Checking whether the map is protected.
* Identifying a safe return route.

#### After Death

Prioritize:

1. Confirming where you respawned.
2. Reaching the nearest unlocked Bonfire or travel route.
3. Avoiding unnecessary combat.
4. Returning to the tomb.
5. Recovering the stored Zeny.
6. Resting and preparing before attempting the encounter again.

#### During Recovery

Use safer movement, defensive equipment and route knowledge rather than attempting to defeat every enemy along the way.

The goal is to reach the grave without creating another eligible death.

{% hint style="success" %}
**What was lost may still be reclaimed.**

Return with patience, recover your Player Tomb and let the defeat become part of your journey rather than its end.
{% endhint %}
